Village Nr1 Reine Fabiola is taking part in the 17th edition of the Social Economic Award, previously the Roger Vanthournout Award. The largest sheltered workshop of Wallonia, a major customer where PHIDAN implemented both a Supply Chain and aw well as an organisational redesign, is in the running for one of the €8000 grants which will be awarded to three companies in the social economic sector. To take part in this competition, companies have to answer to particular principles; to provide a service to the community or members thereof, rather than maintain a profit making policy; independent management; a democratic decision-maker process and to obtain an healthy balance with regard to the internal revenue division.

Air Chase Competition - Winning Projects
PHIDAN was one of the main sponsors of the first edition of the Air Chase Competition, organised by VIB (Vereniging voor Inkoop en Bedrijfslogistiek).
On 18 June, around 50 participants gathered at Groenhoven Castle, Malderen, to take part in this event. The small castle is located in a sublime park, and is a forerunner with regard to the conservation and recycling of energy.
The goal of the Air Chase Competition is to reward the three most innovative projects on the subject of transport optimisation. Please find below a short description of the winning projects selected by the jury, chaired by Jos Marinus, Chairman of VIB.
STAPLES
First prize was awarded to Staples for a packaging optimisation project. The retailer of office material arranged for their packaging machine to be able to cut packaging in height, fit to content, which dramatically decreases the transport of ‘air’ ie empty packaging. This project simultaneously allows Staples to economise greatly on energy and transport.
TRANSPORT JOOSEN
Transport Joosen was awarded second place for optimizing their Eurotranscon software. The software allows the transport company to significantly reduce the kilometres run by empty containers. Eurotranscon allows the transport company who has emptied a container at a certain destination, to obtain a load from a fellow transport company to continue the journey with. 120 transport companies specialised in container traction are currently active on the platform.
DELHAIZE
Supermarket chain Delhaize was awarded 3d place for their «DoubleDeck Project». These types of lorries allow a 60% increase of rollcontainers to be transported in comparison to a regular lorry. These vehicles are in need of more maintenance and handling, and are therefore only profitable on long journeys, over 150KM.
June 2009
Internalisation of External Costs
At the beginning of the year, the European Parliament Transport Commision ratified the Eurovignette draft directive on the basis of the report produced by Saïd El Khadraoui, with the aim to make transport more efficient and durable.
At the moment, EU members can only charge road transport for the infrastructure, whereas the new regulation stipulates a frame agreement within which further charges can now also be collected for transport vehicles. From 2012 onwards, large vehicles weighing in at 3.5 tonnes or more have to pay external costs for the air and noise pollution as well as the congestions caused. CO² emissions have not been withheld in this directive.
Unlike in the past, the revised Eurovignette draft directive will not only apply to the Trans-European network (TEN roads) but to all roads accommodated to allow a reasonable amount of transport. Cities currently retain the right to levy local taxes on top of the set charge.

PHIprofiler - Your Supply Chain DNA
On 24 April 2009, Phidan answered your Supply Chain, Logistic and Procurement questions in a highly informative seminar. We could welcome plenty of interested people in the beautiful settings of the Kasteel Van Ham in Steenokkerzeel.
Key note speaker Professor Dr. Nico Vandaele (KU Leuven) has given an overview of the Supply Chain state in Belgium (view keynote on www.Nyoalatus.com).
PHIDAN has presented its tool to determine the current state of supply chain development within your business as well as how to assess the operational performance of your end-to-end supply chain. This knowledge allows managers to identify operational improvement opportunities, possibly with the use of a diagnostic tool resulting in Supply Chain excellence. Phidan provided visibility into best practices and demonstrated how to achieve functional Supply Chain optimization.

HERENT – Friday 7th September Phidan welcomed over 100 customers on their boat trip in the Port of Antwerp to celebrate its 15 years anniversary.
Last Friday Phidan welcomed over 100 customers on their boat trip in the Port of Antwerp to celebrate its 15 years anniversary. On the occasion of the event Phidan launched its new website. It has some innovative features like web enabled Supply Chain job application capabilities. In the future it will also contain a very extensive database on various themes in Supply Chain management.
With the new website Phidan wants to become a focal point on Supply Chain Management within the industry. On the one hand all people interested in applying for a Supply Chain job can enter their CV in what will become the largest database of Supply Chain professionals. On the other hand Phidan is developing a major database with literature on Supply Chain related topics. The aim is to gather all kind of information on Supply Chain topics in one database, easy accessible for all those in the need for any information on the subject.
“Only with the confidence you as customer had in our services, Phidan was able to become what it is today”, said founding partner Pierre Hazard. The company consists of a team of more than 15 highly specialized Supply Chain experts in Internal and External Logistics, Purchasing and Production Improvement.
Over the years Phidan could count amongst its customers a number of the major companies in industry like Pioneer, Bombardier and Novartis. deSter manages transport costs with Phirater
deSter, provider of food service concepts to almost 350 airlines, has chosen Phidan’s Phirater to get a better grip on its transport costs.
C. Van Hees (Logistics Manager at deSter): “We could have renegotiated our current transport rates and gained a few euros, but this would have led to reduced service levels. That is why we wanted to find an external partner who could make a comprehensive analysis of our current logistical operation. Our conditions were twofold. We did not want to buy into the traditional consulting approach, which would leave us with a plan with a lot of recommendations that we had to implement ourselves. Secondly, rather than presenting an academic concept, we wanted our logistics partner to prove their thorough market knowledge by offering us guaranteed results. The overall target was to reduce the costs for our road transport in Europe by 20%.”
After a thorough analysis, Phidan focused on realising a number of quick wins. With the savings that were generated this way, the company could invest in the long-term improvements that Phirater offers. As soon as the new transport rates were known, the scaffolded implementation of Phirater started.
deSter’s own ERP package and Phirater are completely complementary. Solid process mapping ensures that the data transfers from the ERP package towards Phirater and vice versa have no significant impact on service and delivery performance. C. Van Hees: “We are now able to correctly allocate the costs to our customers. This also allows us to negotiate better agreements with our hauliers.”

Phidan finalist for the Belgian Supply Chain Award 2007 with Mondi Foods project
Phidan has been selected as one of the four companies to compete in the final for the Belgian Supply Chain Award 2007. The SC Award, presented by the Supply Chain professionals association PICS, is the most prestigious award in the field of Supply Chain management.
Phidan has been chosen as one of the four finalists to compete with its project on working capital improvement at Mondi Foods, a company active in the red fruit processing industry. Mondi Foods is a top three player in Europe, delivering red fruit purees, whole frozen fruit and concentrates for the food industry.
Mondi Foods was faced with a large working capital base, required to bridge the year-long period between harvest and demand from the market. They called on Phidan to create innovative solutions to reduce the working capital needed. With a four-fold initiative, Phidan was able to reduce the working capital with 20% within one year.
